"You're right, I didn't like any of it," he said quietly, "But that doesn't mean we can't talk about it. I am hurt and I feel a little betrayed because I had no idea that you were in love with her. Though now that I look back on it, I probably should have known."
"Even though I feel stupid for not knowing that it doesn't mean I want to break up with you," he said, still keeping his voice down. "You are the only person who has ever gotten beneath my mask and seen the real me, and I'd like to say that wasn't all a waste. It, you, still mean something to me, even though I don't know exactly what that means."
"I'm willing to move on from this with you if you still want to be my girlfriend," he said, his mask still in place in case she turned him down. "if not, then I'll understand too. I know I'm not her and I don't have your heart, but maybe someday we'll figure out how we really feel about each other."

"I don't want to be with her. I just want my friend back, but that girl is not my friend. I don't recognize her, anymore," Eris said in response to his acknowledgement of her feelings for Roxy. "I'm sorry I wasn't clearer about my feelings for her. It was intentional. You've already expressed distrust of her, and I didn't want to compound it. I didn't want you to worry that she'd steal me away. She wouldn't. Not now. Maybe in the beginning, before... before I started feeling something for you. I'm glad you're not her, and I don't want to break up."
She had hurt him, and she felt terrible about it. They had promised not to do that. "I'm sorry for hurting you, Abel," she apologized genuinely from behind her stoic mask. "I suppose you didn't hear the parts about falling for you and wanting to be with you."

"Then it's settled, we aren't breaking up," he said as he reached down for her hand. He took hold of it and intertwined their fingers. "No, I didn't hear those parts, I was only standing there for a few moments. Enough to hear the bad."
"I'm sorry that you couldn't get your friend back," he said genuinely from beneath his own mask. "I had good reason not to trust her to treat you right. I can only hope that I can make up for that and show you how you should be treated."

"Good. I don't think I could take losing both of you," Eris said, a slight catch in her throat. "It figures you only heard the things you didn't want to hear. The things I didn't want you to hear, not like that. When I said she's my white whale, I meant in the sense that chasing her would end badly. Not that she was my greatest trophy."
She didn't know if he would believe that, but it was the truth. Nodding, Eris frowned. "I'm sorry, too. I think she needs a friend more than I do," she said, grasping his hand tightly. At least she still had Abel and, to a certain extent, the choir. Roxy had no one.

He nodded as she spoke, unsure if he could believe the bit about the white whale, but she seemed to be speaking genuinely, so Abel took her at her word. Only time would tell if that was a mistake or not. "Does that mean I'm still your greatest trophy?" he asked, halfway joking, halfway being serious, given their prior conversation about it.
"She made her bed when she started that rumor about us," he said. "Now it's time for her to lay in it. Hopefully, she'll put herself back together because she looked pretty unhinged."

"Yeah, you are," Eris gave his hand a squeeze, smiling tentatively. "Though the meaning of that has changed a bit, now."
Eris knew it was Roxy's own fault, even though she blamed her. But she had been correct that it had just driven Eris right into Abel's arms. These little games and psycho gifts weren't changing her mind, either. The girl seemed like an obsessed fan, rather than a person in love. "You were right. I should have listened to you. After I sent her a message to let her know I just wanted to be friends, she sent me a bunch of photos with faces cut out, and mine and her pasted in," she confessed. "I don't know what I was thinking, meeting with her. I just wanted to tell her, to her face, that I don't want to be with her. That way she wouldn't be able to misunderstand. The notes weren't working. And I hoped she'd feel like me, that she would rather be friends than nothing at all."

"I hope so," he said in reference to the meaning of the white whale. He looked at her tentative smile and gave her one of his own. He listened as she explained about the pictures and he shook his head.
"I knew she was a bit crazy but I never would have thought to that extreme," he said. "You were hoping that your best friend was still in there, I can't say I wouldn't have done the same thing that you did. But if she's this unhinged then maybe we should go to the Headmaster and maybe get her some help? I'll have to double check my broom everytime I go out to ride, just in case."

"Yeah, she really needs help. And for the first time, I'm not the one that can give it to her," Eris felt the lump in her throat returning. That was probably the hardest part of all of this. Eris was accustomed to being the only one that could soothe Roxy. Not being able to ease Roxy's apparent suffering was killing her.
"I'll go speak to Headmaster Fontaine first thing in the morning," she said. Roxy needed an outlet, if nothing else. It was unlikely she'd talk to anyone. That just wasn't something Roxy would do. Then again, Eris also thought they'd always be together, one way or another, and she'd been wrong about that. "You can come, too, if you want, but you don't have to."

"Don't think less of yourself because you can't save her this time," he said, giving her hand a gentle squeeze. "You are helping her by going to the Headmaster. If it will make it easier, I'll go with you, but I understand if you want to do it on your own." He looked in her eyes, reaching up with his free hand to gently brush the pad of his thumb through the tear tracks, carrying away any remaining tears or trace of them.
"I'm just glad she didn't try to get physical with you," he said, "I was worried about you, which is why I came as early as I did." He let his hand drop from her face and he slipped it into his pocket for now.

"It's probably best if I go alone," she said, knowing Roxy would probably be there in the office beside Ms. Stewbone. If she went alone, Roxy wouldn't have more fuel for her burning hatred of Abel. Eris lifted her eyes to meet his as he wiped her cheek with his thumb. "Well, she did hug me, but I know that's not the kind of physical you mean," Eris said for the sake of full disclosure. Had he even considered Roxy might try to get that kind of physical? What if she had? Would it have changed the outcome? She wanted to believe it wouldn't have, but she honestly wasn't sure. Not that she would have chosen Roxy because of it, but she might have reciprocated, and that certainly wouldn't have gone over too well with Abel.
"I should probably get to my dorm. It's almost curfew," Eris said, sighing. Would she even be able to sleep?

"Alright then," he said with an understanding nod. "Just let me know what he says?" Abel wouldn't be able to quell his burning curiosity. What solution would the Headmaster propose? He hoped it was something fitting that would actually help Roxy turn from a jealous, seething monster that she was now, into a human again. Maybe then Eris could try again to be her friend, not that Abel really wanted that to happen, but he did want Eris to be happy in every way that mattered to her.
"Let me walk you back to your dorm?" he asked, bringing their combined hands up to his mouth where he pressed a gentle kiss to her knuckles.

"Okay," she said, glad he had asked. Eris wouldn't admit it, but she was worried Roxy would be waiting around some corner, ready to attack. Not that Abel being there would stop Roxy from doing something like that, but at least they'd outnumber her if she did. Granted, Eris could always use secret passages, but the only one nearby led in the opposite direction from her dorm, and going out of her way to get to one that led to the gardens would take just as long. Clutching his hand, she started heading in the direction of the Entrance Hall.

He held onto her hand as they walked toward the front of the school. Though things looked down for Roxy, things looked up for him and he was thankful for it. He wasn't sure what he would have done if he lost Eris now. He had too many feelings to sort through when it came to her, and he didn't want to have the time to sort through them all on his own. He kept alert, his eyes taking in the corridors and dark corners, just in case Roxy had somehow gotten around them without him seeing her. There were rumors of numerous secret passages, but he doubted she knew any of them.
As they exited the castle and headed toward the gardens, Abel looked over at Eris. "I'm sorry that our day had to end this way," he said quietly as they approached the door to her dorm. "I know how badly you wanted everything to work out."

Eris was paying close attention to the shadows and being cautious around corners, too. She relaxed considerably when they finally reached the gardens. "it sucks, but I'll live," she said, smiling weakly. "I'm just glad I still have you."
She thought he'd be less sympathetic to her plight. Abel was now the sole contender for her heart. If Eris were in his shoes, she'd probably be a bit smug about it. "Goodnight, Abel," she said then kissed his cheek. "I'll see you at breakfast in the morning?"

He smiled a little bit at her words, "I'm glad too," he said, not sure what else to say. The only time he gloated was on the quodpot pitch, and he didn't think it would be appropriate for him to play smug when she had just had to give up her best friend because she was now a little psychotic.
"Goodnight, Eris," he said, kissing her cheek in return. He could tell that's all she had in her. "Of course," he said with a slightly bigger smile, hoping to leave her with a sense that at least one thing in this world was good. "I'll see you in the morning," he said as he reluctantly let go of her hand so that she could go inside. He waited until she was safely inside before he turned back to get back to Thunderbird tower before curfew began.
